The Uncertainty Principle- Hats Off Gentleman It's Adequate

I first interviewed Hats Off Gentleman It's Adequate last year. I have since watched them perform at the Hard Rock Hell Prog 14 and was offered the opportunity to interview them about their upcoming album "The Uncertainty Principle" which will be released on Bandcamp on the 4th March 2025 and general release on 30th May 2025.

This is the eighth studio album released by Malcolm and Mark, the reaction so far has been "really positive" and they are excited for the launch gig!

The album explores the history of uncertainty and how it has influenced specific historical events. They are also hoping to host a Bandcamp Listening Party in which fans can listen to them playing their new album live and ask questions about the songs which allows the band to interact with fans from all over the world. They have previously hosted one and greatly enjoyed it, and so hope to do it again.

The launch gig is on Sunday 6th April at The Camden Club in London and making their London debut alongside them will be GHOSTS OF THE MACHINE who will also be launching a new album. It looks to be a great gig, I would recommend going if you are in the London area and since it starts at 1pm, it shouldn't get in the way of a Monday morning (what's not to like!).

The lads now have the difficult decision of choosing which songs to play live at the event, one of their favourite songs on the new album is 'The Ultraviolet Catastrophe' which is instrumental.

One of my favourite songs from the new album is 'Between Two Worlds' I thought it was absolutely brilliant, I found it very moving, and the lyrics seem apt, considering the world's current circumstances, even though it is about someone awaiting an MRI scan for cancer and contemplating what the world might end up being like depending on the results.

Another song that caught my attention was 'Everything Changed', the heavy use of synths combined with Malcolm's smooth vocals makes for a great combination. This album is perfect for anyone who enjoys science, rock, and history. The wonderful thing about this album is the mixture of different styles, from Instrumental songs to Iron Maiden influences, there is something for everyone.

I was also offered the chance to review their new EP, 'Between Two Worlds'. The title track "Between Two Worlds" is on the new album, but there is also a lovely instrumental song called 'Helgoland'. Helgoland was meant to be released at a later date, due to it not fitting chronologically with the rest of the album (all the songs on the new album are in chronological order) but was accidentally released a tad earlier.

The EP also features a live cover of 'I'm Tired and Everything Hurts' recorded at the Prog for Peart Festival last year. Helgoland is very different from their usual style, Malcolm mentioned that they "wouldn't want to write a whole album like it" but are happy to show their different musical influences and "refresh the ears" which it certainly does.

If that wasn't enough musical content to get your teeth into, Malcolm has also released his seventh solo instrumental/classical album 'Metazoa' which will be on general release on 18th April 2025.

This album features music inspired by Metazoa organisms (something Malcolm is interested in) with specific pieces inspired by the evolution of animals. These pieces are each unique in their way, but one that really stood out to me was 'Xenobotany' which is the study of alien plants, and this track was inspired "by imagined plants on an alien world" which set my imagination off as I visualised what these plants would look like and what their world would resemble.

Alongside releasing new music, the lads are busy planning their schedule for this year, here are just a few of their upcoming appearances: They will be performing at 45 Live in Kidderminster on Sunday 27th April, Mark infact will be playing two sets, one with IT (another band he plays in) and another with Hats Off.

Mark and Malcolm are excited about their upcoming gigs, they are delighted about the "resurgence of Prog Rock music festivals" and "proud to be a part of the scene". Hats off will also be playing on the main stage at Hard Rock Hell Prog XV in Great Yarmouth on Saturday 15th November 2025.

Last year, they hosted their most successful fundraiser for World Land Trust yet and plans are afoot for their next fundraiser on Saturday December 6th.
