GY Folk Night
The GY Folk Night is held on the first Thursday of every month at the Blackfriars Tavern in Great Yarmouth and it is full of joy and community.

The pub was full of countless musical instruments, from dulcimers to violins, flutes and accordions. My late uncle used to make and play dulcimers so it was lovely to hear one again,it brought back many memories and emotions! It was also lovely to hear some classic sea shanties, that is something we always do well in Great Yarmouth.
I am always struck by the community spirit at Blackfriars, but it was certainly out in full force this evening. Someone had even been so impressed by the last folk evening that they went home and wrote their own folk song called 'Yarmouth The Great', it was a lovely tribute to our little town.
There was also a very moving song about the importance of passing on positive information and love for our surroundings to children rather than hatred or misinformation which sadly has found a foothold again in the UK. We also had a poem from the artist Jason Parr which only added to the atmosphere. At one point we even had a couple jiving, they had limited space but did a great job and I was thoroughly impressed.

I am very spoilt to have the Blackfriars as my local pub and I would recommend this event to anyone that might like folk music. You don't have to sing if you don't want to, I personally didn't sing, but I was happy enough to sit there and watch. There was also a very sweet dog who wanted cuddles which for me always adds extra joy to an event.
Well done to the organisers Kathryn and Sofia, and the Blackfriars Tavern for a wonderful evening. The Blackfriars Tavern is always popular but I think this might have been the busiest I had ever seen it. I would certainly recommend making the most of the wonderful community spaces we have and supporting your local pubs.
When we work together as a community, positive things happen. The next GY Folk evening is on Thursday 5th November at 7pm.
