Interview with Jason MacDonald- Photographer, Radio Presenter & Graphic Designer

At the start of January I had the pleasure of interviewing Jason MacDonald, Jason who is based in Norfolk is someone I have had worked with in the past as a model so I was delighted to be given the chance to interview him.

Jason has been a professional photographer for four years and believes he was heavily influenced by his late Grandfather who had his own dark room and developed his own images and slides, one image that stood out to Jason was that of his sister throwing a shotput (she was part of the Norfolk Olympics Team!) in full gear.

Jason remembers thinking that the dark room was "the best thing in the world" as a child

and a few years ago was given some of his late grandfather's camera equipment which is a wonderful way to carry on his memory.

I was curious to see what Jason felt the future held for photography considering the impact of Covid-19 and he believes that modelling shoots once it it is safe are going to increase massively once vaccines are more widely available but sadly Wedding and Event photography is going to struggle due to neglect from the goverment.

Last year despite the pandemic, Jason was given the chance to photograph at a socially distanced music festival called 'Wild Paths' in September from the 12th to 13th and Jason photographed performers such as Another Sky, Indoor Pets and Emily Parish. The festival was well organised and Jason is looking forward to doing more music photography in the future.

Future Plans

Jason hosts an Alternative music show on Rural Radio every Saturday evening featuring new and unsigned artists from across the world and he spoke to me about his plans for"the next evolution of the radio show" which will include introducing a YouTube channel which will feature performances, exclusive acoustic sets by music acts and interviews from festivals.

As well as photography and radio presenting, Jason is the owner of 'Lost Bear Media', a graphic design company which offers Logo design, commercial photography and much more. Jason is also going to be offering photoshoot vouchers for his business Scream Photographic which I would recommend ordering and using once we are safe to do so.

Ultimately in the future, Jason hopes to be able to combine all of his passions together.

I always like to ask my interviewees about their dream clients and Jason chose The Cure and Dave Grohl, both excellent choices (I am a fan of both, especially The Cure) which link in well with Jason's alternative music interests. Jason then mentioned wishing he could shoot Keith Flint and I suggested he could shoot a Prodigy themed tribute and Jason admitted that there is a Firestarter themed shoot in discussion.

Jason also mentioned two photographers whose work stands out and have influenced him, these are Matthias Hombauer and Andrzej Dragan who are both worth looking up. Matthias Hombauer especially as he produced a series of podcasts to help photographers get into concert photography https://www.howtobecomearockstarphotographer.com/ .

To conclude, Jason has some excellent projects coming up and I wish him the best of luck with them and hope to work with him again in the future!
